Gastroenteritis

Gastroenteritis is usually caused by a viral infection in the stomach. Dehydration is a possible serious complication. To minimise the chances of dehydration:

  1. Stop food for 24 - 48 hours.
  2. Plenty to drink. Give frequent small amounts rather than a glassful at once.

If symptoms persist for more than 48 hours without any improvement or 24 hours in babies under twelve months, contact the surgery.

Burns

Immerse in cold water or run cold water over the burn for a good ten minutes. Remove jewellery and clothing, not actually sticking to the burned area. Cover the burn with cling film and seek medical advice.

High Temperatures in Children

A high temperature in children is usually due to an infection. To lower the child’s temperature try the following:

  1. Remove any warm clothing.
  2. Sponge the child down with tepid water and allow to dry naturally.
  3. Give Paracetamol.
  4. Give plenty of cool drinks.

If the cause of the infection is not apparent or the child appears particularly ill, bring the child to the surgery as they will be seen more quickly. This will do no harm and often fresh air helps.

Back Pain

Back pain might be relieved simply by bed rest and Paracetamol or Nurofen. If pain stiffness or muscle spasm persists or sciatica develops, injection therapy, manipulation, acupuncture or physiotherapy may be required.
